How this calculator works
An acre is defined as exactly 43,560 square feet in the United States, so converting is a single division: square feet ÷ 43,560 = acres. Going the other way, multiply acres by 43,560. If you only know the lot’s dimensions, multiply length by width first to get square feet.
An acre has no fixed shape — it is any area of 43,560 sq ft. A square acre is about 208.7 ft on each side; a football field without end zones (300 × 160 ft) is about 1.1 acres.
Assumptions and tips
- Uses the international acre (43,560 sq ft). The old U.S. survey acre differs by about 2 parts per million — irrelevant for lot sizes.
- For irregular lots, use the area from your survey or plat rather than length × width.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Convert | Square feet → acres |
| Area | 10,000 sq ft |
