How this calculator works
The lawn area plus a waste allowance is divided by the coverage of one piece and of one pallet. Both are rounded up, since sod is sold in whole pieces and pallets.
Sod to order = Area × (1 + Waste%/100)
Pieces = round up( Sod ÷ Piece area )
Pallets = round up( Sod ÷ Pallet coverage )
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Lawn area | 1,000 sq ft |
| Waste allowance | 5 % |
| Piece type | Slab 16 × 24 in (≈2.67 sq ft) |
| Pallet coverage | 450 sq ft |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Pallets | 3 pallets |
| Pieces | 394 pieces |
| Sod to order | 1,050 sq ft |
Step by step:
- Order = 1,000 × 1.05 = 1,050 sq ft
- Pieces = 1,050 ÷ 2.67 → 394
- Pallets = 1,050 ÷ 450 → 3
Sod pallets by lawn size
450 sq ft pallets, 5% waste.
| Lawn | Pallets | Slabs (16 × 24 in) |
|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 2 pallets | 197 pieces |
| 1,000 sq ft | 3 pallets | 394 pieces |
| 2,000 sq ft | 5 pallets | 787 pieces |
| 5,000 sq ft | 12 pallets | 1,967 pieces |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Letting sod sit on the pallet in the sun — lay it the day it arrives.
