How this calculator works
Calendar days are the plain difference between the dates; choose whether to count the end date too (for example, a hotel stay doesn’t, but a vacation “from Monday to Friday” usually does). Business days count Monday to Friday and, if you choose, skip the 11 US federal holidays on the days they are observed — a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday and a Sunday holiday on Monday.
Assumptions and tips
- Federal holiday rules follow 5 U.S.C. 6103. State and company holidays differ — banks also close on most federal holidays.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Start date | 2026-11-02 |
| End date | 2027-01-04 |
| Include the end date | No (count the days in between) |
| Business days skip US federal holidays | Yes |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Calendar days | 63 days |
| Business days | 41 days |
| Weeks and days | 9 weeks, 0 days |
| Months and days | 2 months, 2 days |
| Weekend days | 18 days |
| Federal holidays on weekdays | 4 days |
| Hours | 1,512 hours |
Step by step:
- Days = 2027-01-04 − 2026-11-02
- Business days = Monday–Friday in that range
- Then remove US federal holidays that fall on weekdays (observed dates)
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting to decide whether the end date counts — it changes the answer by one day.
- Counting a holiday that falls on a Saturday as a day off on Saturday — it is usually observed on the Friday.
