How this calculator works
Cups measure volume; grams measure weight. Because ingredients have different densities, the conversion depends on what you are measuring: a cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g, a cup of sugar about 198 g and a cup of butter about 227 g. The calculator multiplies your volume by the grams-per-cup figure for the ingredient you choose.
Grams = Cups × Grams per cup (ingredient)
1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 236.6 ml
Assumptions and tips
- Values follow the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, for flour spooned into the cup and leveled.
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Ingredient | All-purpose flour |
| Convert | Volume → grams |
| Amount | 2 |
| Unit | cups |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Grams | 240 g |
| Ounces (weight) | 8.47 oz |
| Grams per cup of this ingredient | 120 g |
| Grams per tablespoon | 7.5 g |
Step by step:
- Convert 2 cup to cups (1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 236.6 ml)
- Grams = cups × grams per cup of this ingredient

Common mistakes to avoid
- Scooping flour straight from the bag — it packs in up to 30% extra.
- Using one conversion for every ingredient; a cup of honey weighs almost three times a cup of flour.
