How this calculator works
Hours up to the overtime threshold are paid at your regular rate. Hours above it are paid at the overtime rate (1.5× under federal law), and any hours you mark as double time are paid at 2×.
Regular pay = min(Hours, 40) × Rate
Overtime pay = (Hours − 40 − DT hours) × Rate × 1.5 + DT hours × Rate × 2
Worked example
Using the default values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Regular hourly rate | $22 |
| Total hours worked this week | 48 h |
| Overtime starts after | 40 h |
| Overtime rate | Time and a half (1.5×) |
| Of those, double-time hours | 0 h |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Gross pay this week | $1,144 |
| Overtime pay | $264 |
| Regular hours | 40 h |
| Overtime hours | 8 h |
| Double-time hours | 0 h |
| Overtime hourly rate | $33 |
| Effective hourly rate | $23.83 |
| Yearly at this schedule (52 weeks) | $59,488 |
Step by step:
- Regular: 40 h × $22 = $880
- Overtime: 8 h × $22 × 1.5 = $264
- No double-time hours
- Total = $1,144
Common mistakes to avoid
- Averaging two weeks together — federal overtime is figured week by week, so 50 + 30 hours is 10 hours of overtime, not zero.
